The church between two slums

The Deliverance Church Has The Community Working Together
In some ways, we have been asking Africa to eat off of a one-legged table that keeps falling over. To solve the poverty issue, the table of prosperity must have four strong legs: enterprise, food, land and strong core values (Christianity). If any one of the legs is missing, the table falls, and we keep repeating the same problems over and over. There are thousands of strong, well meaning missions, NGOs and social services in Africa, but we all need to work together. We need to be tightly integrated for lasting social change to take place. Food must come with work, responsibility and core value change.
I spent a weekend living with Pastor Wanyonyi between the slums in ministry and taking photographs. I had dinner in mud homes and played with the street kids. The deliverance church is an island of hope and spiritual peace. It is filled with laughter and tears.

I am part of the Brooklyn Tabernacle prayer band. When the children prayed in Kenya, I would lean up on the outside of the building and pray with them. You witness rivers of mercy flowing in and you just shatter inside. They are so sincere… so faithful.
Sometimes an orphan comes in after seeing horrific things. Things like a parent being butchered like a goat before them or the children of the Sudan witnessing mass death. The girls have a method of dealing with the newcomer’s night terrors. They team a few girls with the newcomer and sleep with her through the night. Only love and mercy can heal this type of heart.
Images of Margaret staring out over the thousand or so children they support in the compound, wondering how they will make it through next week, brings me to my knees in prayer to this day. Four children use a desk that holds two, and when the two standing up in back of the class get tired, they switch seats. There is one book for four students, and they need teachers. America has thousands of skilled, retired teachers and basements filled with unused books. Yet these people have nothing but hope in their hearts.
The Pastor Moses
Moses is an amazing man, so much like Pastor Cymbala. He and his wife have come from having nothing to this amazing ministry. Kenya is filled with wealthy, political Bishops with fancy things. Moses has been offered it all, but he loves his community and flock. One day he is hosing down hundreds of slum children, doing leadership training for public school teachers, and is at the same time constantly challenged by running out of resources or having his life threatened.
This is a mission that deserves massive help and it will have awesome impact in a place where the UN truck came to die.
